The ruins of Fort Ceperou are here if visiting ruins rings your chimes.  Otherwise, there’s not a whole lot to see or do.

A 1.5-hour catamaran cruise transports you to the Iles du Salut (Islands of the Salvation), a chain of three islands (Royal Island, St. Joseph Island, and the infamous Devil’s Island) used by France’s penal system from 1892 - 1946.  Henri Charriere of “Papillon” was imprisoned here.

THE BEST TIME TO VACATION (?) IN GUYANA:

Never.  If you must, visit during March and September through November.

AVOID: The wet rainy seasons are December to early February and late April to early August.  The humidity can become oppressive.

GEORGETOWN: Georgetown is the capital of Guyana and the nation’s largest city.  Picturesque and beautiful it is not, with open ditches on either side of the streets.

The 1899 St. George’s Anglican Cathedral is one of the tallest (143 feet high) freestanding wooden churches in the world, an insurance company fire underwriter’s worst nightmare!

Since you’re in the neighborhood, you might wish to visit both the National Museum and the Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology.

TIME ON YOUR HANDS IN GUYANA:

One does not come to Guyana to vacation.  You might say that the place is a tropical jungle/grassland.  There are no nice sandy beaches on which to sunbathe and darn few lodging choices; in short, there are few redeeming qualities to entice Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton to want to develop a luxury resort.

Sandbars, mud flats, and shallow waters have always been a hindrance in developing shipping; cargo must be unloaded at sea.

If you follow our advice, you’ll probably exit Guyana safe and sound: don’t drink the Kool-Aid!

Kaieteur Falls, 800 feet high, and one of the nation’s major sights, lures fanatics that enjoy waterfalls.
