THE TREND TOWARD AIRLINE CONSOLIDATIONS:

The hysteria to merge will result in fewer and larger airlines offering nationwide non-stop service.  This may well cause fares to increase.  The hope is that nitch and discount airlines will proliferate and remain profitable.

Predictably the day will arrive when multi-national airlines will fly domestic U.S. and European routes.  Rather than flying American or United Airlines from New York to Los Angeles, you’ll dine on dim sum as you fly China Airlines, Emirates Airline, Qatar Airways, or Etihad Airways.  Get used to these names, as Etihad Airways, a mere four years old, has grown to a fleet of 37 aircraft and is flying to 45 cities.  The Emirates currently has a fleet of 140 aircraft and has orders to add 106 more.  Middle Eastern airlines placed over 50 billion dollars in aircraft orders at the 2007 Paris Air show!
